Much longer than it needed to be I love Sandemose, but the translation was by turns clunky and hokey, in dire need of an update, and less faithfulness in reconstructing Norwegian syntax in English The plot meanders, but the themes and the historical context are not often broached in the US so I enjoyed the moral and ethical dilemmas raised by the post war conditions of ex collaborators attempting to reassert themselves into society, without compunction, and the ex freedom fighters unable to let [...]
