    1. Is this guy really still alive at 102 That s what the internet says.Chilean poet Nicanor Parra was considered by Roberto Bolano to be the best living Spanish language poet, and his many admirers on both sides of the Equator have included Neruda, Mistral, William Carlos Williams, Ferlinghetti, Ginsberg, and Merwin According to biographer Frank MacShane, Parra s career as a mathematician and physicist may have influenced his poetry in the following ways 1 his study of the theory of relativity made [...]

    2. The PilgrimYour attention, ladies and gentlemen, your attention for one moment Turn your heads for a second to this part of the republic,Forget for one night your personal affairs,Pleasure and pain can wait at the door There s a voice from this part of the republic.Your attention, ladies and gentlemen Your attention for one moment A soul that has been bottled up for yearsIn a sort of sexual and intellectual abyss,Nourishing itself most inadequately through the nose,I d like to find out some thin [...]

    3. Good book to read while staying up at night due to unstoppable coughing you ll cough even , but the night gets remembered for something else Strong, emotionally dense and unpretentious, plain and pictorial, modest and brutal at the same time Full of humor and sarcasm, and also mocking the sarcasm itself.Several different styles, from the short the introduction says graffiti like to the epic poems in scale, though united by simple narration and topics of people, society, religion, politics I m ju [...]

    4. This brand of poetry called antipoetry was a worldview than a movement On its surface, it was like personal stuff than philosophical slash political stance More myth than legend If there was a guiding principle to it, then perhaps it was the anti establishment position A show of bravery and bravado, it knew not serious pretense nor preternatural seriousness It was a show of freedom than anything else.My full blog post on this book here booktrek 2014 11

    5. A wonderful selection of Parra gems, by a host of most able translators and admirers, among them Merwin, Ginsberg, and Ferlinghetti Unforgettable and indispensable to all who wish to discover Parra one of the century s brightest and most deceptively blunt antidotes to bilge. My favorite poems in here are too long to quote, so I ll offer a cheeky, quintessential bite size from Salon Verses 1962 ROLLER COASTERFor a half a centuryPoetry was the paradiseOf the solemn fool.Until I came alongAnd built [...]

    6. I loved Parra s sense of humour, his insincerity, his defiance and his subversion of typical poetry A literary pick me up.

    7. This and his other volume How to Look Great and Feel Better are wonderful Hilarious and beautifulI will read and reread these poems the rest of my days

    8. Some of these were really funny, but I definitely felt like I was missing a lot of the humour At his best, he s one of the best.
