I started off in total adoration of this book all sorts of great stories from an almost insider perspective on some of the greatest restaurants, chefs, and restauranteurs of New Orleans back in the day What I came to realize as I read on, though, was that Tom F is a bit of an elitist than I would care to take recommendations from, and while I admire his dedication to the city, I didn t end up won over by any means I definitely loved some of the old stories from Pre K NOLA, but felt like he was [...]

I probably feel especially fond of this book given that we just spent an amazing weekend in NOLA eating four to five fabulous meals per day and thanking the heavens every ten minutes that Katrina did not wash this glorious city away I liked the self deprecating writing and I really want to listen to the author s radio show I love that there is an entire city in this country where it is not only appropriate but expected that people will talk obsessively about food I am thinking that there are one [...]

This book starts off as the story of a food writer radio guy The author talks about New Orleans food and the food scene The second half is about the way Hurricane Katrina affected New Orleans, the restaurants, the author, and the food scene It is a story that is very different form other accounts of the Hurricane and it is both interesting and hunger inducing

    4. Although he comes across as arrogant just as in his radio show, the book is still an excellent survey of the local restaurant scene New Orleans is a small town The chef community is even smaller.

I thought that Hungry Town got off to kind of a slow start, but quickly picked up Technically, this isn t a complete history of restaurants in New Orleans as the author generally deals with the periods that he was around for personally 1970s to 2010 On the other hand, you can t argue with the first person expertise of someone who lived through and was intimately involved with, these establishments and chefs as they evolved I have to say that I liked this book better when Fitzmorris was describin [...]

I m amazed at how interesting I found a food based book that is primarily about food I m not interested in particularly a lot of seafood But Tom Fitzmorris makes a compelling case for the importance of food in New Orleans and particularly how food culture and restaurants in particular were critical to the recovery of the city after Hurricane Katrina Reading this book also helped me understand why the staff at Emeril s when I tried to just stop in for dessert while I was in New Orleans a few year [...]

This wasn t precisely what I wanted it was of a deep dive into the New Orleans restaurant scene in the 1980s 90s, as well as the author s memoir Which I still found enjoyable, since it s interesting to read about many of the pivotal figures in the New Orleans restaurant scene However, I was looking for a history of the actual cuisine and dishes of the food culture, rather than the people behind them.

    8. Yum I have been to many of these restaurants in the 35 years that I have been going to New Orleans And, there are now many restaurants in the New Orleans that I want to visit and enjoy While there are some good recipes in the book, it was important to me to read the behind the scenes.

I m ready to eat.About the book He s a natural talker, and writes like he most likely speaks on his radio show, recounting tales of the dining world he knows well in a style that is unaffected, but also long winded The recipes are fun to read clarified butter, anyone and this, than anything, tells the tale of the city he s tried to paint.

A must read for anyone who visits New Orleans My husband and I want to choose it for our book club to read when it is next our turn, but not everyone is as crazy about New Orleans and its food history as we are It also gives a good feel of the effect of Katrina on the people of New Orleans and how food has been important in the city s recovery.

I d give this a 3.5 A great read about one of my favorite culinary cities with firsthand stories about the restaurant families and chefs that molded the city into the culinary destination it is today Great insight on Katrina and how food brought the city back Some parts were a little long winded, but I d recommend to anyone who likes to eat and loves Nola.

The first 100 pages were a bit tedious but once you hit the next 100 I was not able to put it down It s a very good story about NOLA and its culinary revival I m not from the area so I was a bit unfamiliar with the author and this made the first 100 pages a bit difficult, but if you trudge on it becomes quite the story.

    17. Tom might not always be loveable but I always find him interesting Was a fan of his radio show, and if you re from NOLA I think you have to read this I m really into memoirs lately, so this mixes memoir with very local food history.

If you love New Orleans, or are just planning a visit, this book is required reading It covers the dining scene, so important to NOLA s identity, before and after Katrina Emphasizes the resilience of people while not ignoring the severity of the situation Complete with a few recipes to try.

    19. Enjoyable an interesting read about the restaurant scene in New Orleans from the 60s, through Katrina and into the present For any of us that wonder if there truly is uniquely American food, this book is the answer there is at least in New Orleans.

    21. This was of a memoir of a food critic than a history Although the information about the food and restaurant scene in NOLA was interesting, I found the author snooty and annoying He did redeem himself slightly near the end, as he discussed a post Katrina New Orleans.

    22. I was expecting a fuller of history of New Orleans as told through its food culture This was a history of its restaurant scene from the mid twentieth century onward but still an interesting read.

    23. I would give this a 4.5 I loved this history of the restaurant scene and how he interwove the history of the national scene and of Katrina The tone once in a while bothered me as well as the focusing on one part of the population.

    24. Tom Fitzmorris has written an incredibly good book on New Orleans food and restaurants He has been reviewing restaurants in NOLA for a long time so he definitely knows his stuff I loved the book.

    25. I am obsessed with NOLA cuisine and Hurricane Katrina, which are the intertwined topics of this book The author convinced me of the unique food centered culture of the area and it s role in Katrina healing.

    26. An interesting culinary history of New Orleans The pre Katrina section started to drag on a little for me, but then I m not from N.O and have not eaten at most of the places Mr Fitzmorris mentioned.

    27. Excellent Story of pre and post Katrina New Orleans dining scene with recipes Anyone who enjoys eating in New Orleans will love this book.
