    1. Malcom Guite is one of my favourite poets, so to read a selection of his beautiful sonnets, alongside an eclectic mix from others, was a great treat and a wonderful way to spend the Lenten season Here we have a poem a day, followed by Malcolm s reflection and unravelling of it There s an introduction which helps prepare our hearts for the weeks ahead Each week of Lent has its own theme which includes a selection of sonnets and other poetic styles incorporated with insightful prose As the book dr [...]

    2. I recently attended a musical concert presented by Steve Bell loved it and he recommended Malcolm Guite as a worthy poet with wonderful and meaningful offerings of poetry I was greatly impressed with the poems Steve Bell put to music, and decided to pursue Malcolm Guite s poetry for myself.Although my knowledge and understanding of poetry is limited, this book provided a beautiful and meaningful preparation for Easter I particularly enjoyed those poems written by Malcolm Guite himself, but also [...]

    3. As a devotional, The Word in the Wilderness does double duty First, it helps one focus on Christ, on the Lenten season and on preparing for Easter Second, it does this in a refreshingly new way by using poetry Guite does not presume an understanding for or a love of poetry Rather he guides the reader through the poetry In the end, one gains, not only an appreciation for Christ and his sacrifice, but for the poetry as well.

    4. Excellent selection to read through Lent and Easter each year The poems are by major poets, e.g Lewis, Herbert, Hopkins etc as well as a selection from Malcolm Guite s own work Each poem has a short commentary as well, so this makes for a great reading cycle for this season.

    5. I ve used this during lent and Easter week for two years in a row now The selection of poems is beautiful, and the reflections are helpful although in a time crunch just the poems alone are well worth the book Having loved it twice with plans to read it again it s a five star book for me.

    6. This was my daily reading during the Lenten season leading up to Easter It was an enjoyable daily moment to read a poem and insightful commentary to prepare for Easter I think I will return to this each Lenten season.

    7. A Lenten journey in poetry, with text to accompany each poem and flesh out less obvious allusions and associations, and to introduce us to the hearts of the various poets Excellent writing, insightful commentary, and a lovely collection of accessible, to the point, poems.

    8. If I could have given this ten stars, I would. While this is a book for Lent and Easter, I got behind because of travels and illness how s that apt for Lent I m glad I didn t rush this one If a book for Lent can be a delight, this counts. This is not simply an anthology of poems, but a masterclass in poetry The Meeting Virgil essay alone would be worth the entire slim volume but every day was an absolute feast.

    9. A moving journey through the lenten season with poems from the ages accompanied by Guite s commentary and thoughts on each I particularly enjoyed his own poems with their rich words and thought provoking takes on the events and the journey.

    10. Superb I didn t manage to read it very day in Lent, but I think I will try again next year I did try again, and found Malcolm Guite a most enlightening and helpful companion Brilliant selection of poems, and sensitive discussion Highly recommended.
