    1. Most people when they think of the women associated with the great nineteenth century painter, Dante Gabriel Rossetti split into two camps there are those who are enthusiastic supporters of his wife and first muse, the long suffering and ill used Lizzie Siddal, and of course there are those who are fascinated by the strong, silent woman who dominated his later work, Jane Morris, the wife of his friend William Morris In her earlier excellent book, Stunner, Walker made a case for a third usually f [...]

    2. A Curl of Copper and Pearl is a beautiful fictional biography of the Pre Raphaelite model Alexa Wilding, who sat for Dante Gabriel Rossetti and inspired several of his most iconic paintings In her Alexa Wilding, Kirsty Stonell Walker creates an engaging guide through the last, turbulent years of Rossetti s life Alexa is a working class girl who is thrust into the intriguing and occasionally confounding world of bohemian artists, their wealthy patrons, and their hanger ons, both good and evil Thr [...]

    3. I loved this story about Alexa Wilding, one of Rossetti s models This is one of my favourite subject matters, and living so close to Kelmscott Manor, I have been there many times so it was great to read the parts of the book set there Well written and engaging.

    4. If you want those Pre Raphaelite characters to be brought alive in a whole new way, this is the book to read George Boyce plays an important part, but the one who increasingly dominates, as no doubt he did at the time, is Dante Gabriel Rossetti the charismatic one, and the romantic, poetic, aesthete par excellence He was also the devoted, sometimes helpless, follower of the muse and here in Kirsty Stonell Walker s novel there are three of those The three main ones in fact Fanny Cornforth, Jane M [...]

    5. I wish had half star ratings I give this 2 1 2 to 3 stars This veers toward the fiction side of historical fiction, but for the most part, the characters are well fleshed out and believable The forgery sub plot seems rushed, as does the end In fact, as the book progressed and Alice developed and we reached the forgery sub plot, I became especially frustrated with her reactionsI kept wanting her to defend herself, to REACT during the forgery caperThis is a woman who has taken control of her own [...]

    6. I read this after reading Beauty in Thorns and becoming intrigued by the artists from this period This book has the same characters but focuses on Alexa, one of Gabriel s lesser known models.

    7. Alice Willding is rescued from the streets and the life of a poor seamstress She is regularly beaten and humiliated by her uncle The famous painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti employs her as a model and Alice s life changes as she never thought possible Her character, based on a true woman, is a likeable, independent woman who comes into her own, through both romance and heartbreak Other characters in the book were harder to like as they took advantage of the heroine Have not read author before Would [...]

    8. I won a copy of this book from First Reads program This book sets out to tell the tale of the forgotten most unknown of Rosetti s models, Alexa Wilding It however, strays quite far from even the few known facts It then adds a great deal of flowery prose The characters were not engaging to me Time passed and yet characters were unchanged despite events that could cause growth Alexa constantly overheard people mocking her was hurt and promptly resolved to change and did nothing repeatedly Some cha [...]
