    1. This story is about a boy named Jo Lee and how his mother sends him from China to live with his uncle in California His father had passed and his mother and sister were trying to survive but there was a draught in their village His mother sent him orange tree branches wrapped in oil When he arrived in California, he planted the branches on Golden Mountain Jo Lee and his uncle worked hard to save money for his mother and sister to bring them from China In the end Jo Lee tends his young orange sap [...]

    2. I read this book and really didn t enjoy it as much as I did with the other books The illustrations weren t as beautiful or creative The characters had lines as their eyes which I found racist because it portrays all Asians have small eyes and I don t think we should teach kids that aspect It had a lot of words which I think kids will not be interested to read all the words At the end of the book, I did not want to finish because to me it had a dull plot Although the character did travel to Cali [...]

    3. Oranges on Golden Mountain is an historical story that tells of impoverished Chinese who flee to California in the hopes of making money and being able to provide a better life for themselves and their families This event takes place during the age of the Gold Rush where many Chinese worked hard to send money back to China in the hopes of bringing their family to the United States Jo Lee is a small Chinese boy who travels across the sea to California in the hopes of achieving this very same goal [...]

    4. I didn t know that Golden Mountain was the name that Chinese immigrants used for California in the 1850s This was very interesting and educational for me It certainly brings to light the immigration stories that happened on the west coast East coast immigration stories have been told through and through in children s fiction, but the immigrants that came to the west coast have been underrepresented This would be good for the middle elementary grades I enjoyed it.

    5. Good voice in this picture book story about Chinese Americans in California, emigration and immigration, planting orange trees, wonderful papercut illustrations.

    6. Chinese immigrants have a story to tell and this book talks about the importance of family and hard work Excellent pictures
