    1. Some books can be wolfed down like lunch at the office desk, quick bites between phone calls Pauline Montagna s finely plotted, ambitious 400 plus pages novel The Slave is best consumed unhurried, with a glass of Chianti at your elbow, like a traditional Italian Sunday dinner The author sets her table with familiar food forbidden love between a Juliet and her Romeo and the plot with several unexpected revelations and some intriguing subplots unfolds without an eye on the clock, mirroring life in [...]

    2. Filled with human emotion and intrigue, The Slave is a compelling story of a forbidden love that brings 14th century Italy to life with vibrant authenticity Montagna has created an atypical love triangle from which there can be no escape but by death between Aurelia, daughter of an affluent merchant Lorenzo, her husband, son and heir from a noble family and Batu, an Asian slave boy The fully fleshed characters elicit a wide range of emotions from warmth to loathing and even pity for the antagoni [...]

    3. I was approached by the author to review this work and, since it sounded like an interesting story, I agreed to give it a try.Overall, the story was fairly enjoyable, but the characters, while reasonably well written, failed to truly engage my emotions, leaving me feeling a little apart from the action This wasn t helped by the fact that there were sections of the EPUB copy I was sent with track changes mingled in huge sections crossed out, bits slotted in here and there which made it hard to re [...]

    4. A real page turner I was first drawn to it by the original love story the author proposes as the main feature in the plot A young woman from a rich Italian family doomed to obey her father first, then her husband, the man his father chose for her and a slave coming from Asia and serving in her house, a handsome young man with a broken soul and a mysterious past.As Harriet Martineau states in her works about women s rights, slaves and women experienced the same kind of subjection an absolute luck [...]

    5. I thoroughly enjoyed this book An engaging story and so elegantly written that the reading of it was almost a sensual pleasure Such a change from so many books nowadays which are pedestrian in style and full of mistakes in grammar and punctuation Usually with historical fiction I prefer to read only books which are going to teach me about real people events something do to with getting two things for the price of one, I think but I started this on a long train journey when I wanted something pur [...]

    6. An excellent read which is rich in language and description This book is an authentic historical romance to cherish I loved the courageous heroine and her exotic hero I enjoyed the twists in the plot Every character is entirely credible and their development is fulsome.

    7. It s a romance Don t faint He s a Mongol, and I very much like the author s Shakespeare novel I read the sample, and feel I can be drawn into the spirit, when he s a Mongol That s unusual, let s face it.
